Born in Osaka in 1955, Yoshino came of age during Japan’s period of miraculous economic reconstruction. Unlike many of her male contemporaries who celebrated the era’s technological futurism, Yoshino was drawn to the fraying edges of the old city. Her early sketches, often exhibited but rarely published, focused not on new construction but on koshi (latticed wooden windows) and engawa (the ambiguous, in-between verandas that are neither inside nor outside).
